Quasi is a sculpture that was originally commissioned in 2016 from Ronnie van Hout. It has taken up a new home atop of Wellington City Gallery and is generating a lot of buzz. It’s been labelled ‘creepy’, ‘nightmarish’ and ‘hideous’. But the consensus at AM-A is that is pretty funky.
Quasi is also testament to what can be achieved with modern CAM, CAD and CNC technologies. Quasi was cut from polystyrene foam using a 5-axis CNC machine programmed from a 3D CAD model. An integral steel frame supports the piece and anchors it in place. The foam has been coated with a low-styrene resin system to give it a hard and durable exterior. These sort of techniques where limited to the niche high end of manufacturing just 10 years ago. However, now there is cost effective access to 5-axis large format machining in most Australian capitals.
If your looking to use some of the techniques we’ve just discussed in your next project. Get in touch with AM-A about how we can guide you through the process and provide engineering design and certification services.
